Welcome to the Huruma Family…

By Mama Zipporah – Founder/Director

We feel blessed and delighted this moment as we share with you what the Lord has been doing in our wonderful Home and lives during the month of August. We pray that you will be refreshed and blessed as you read through it. We hope you, our friends and partners will be joyful and glad as you read the news update. In this edition we have included news about the family, school, health and income generating activities.

On behalf of Huruma Trust Fund, I would like to thank you for supporting our Sponsor-A-Child-to-School College Sponsorship program as well as our on-going dormitory construction project which we hope to completer the first block this October and will hold a capacity of 120. This was my dream that I shared with my board of Directors which I had written earlier in 1993 from the book of Habakkuk 2:2-3 that even if the vision tarries that at the appointed time it will surely came to pass.

It has taken us 11 years since we started building the school and we thank God for all our national and international loving partners who have come beside me to make this dream of providing a place for my children to sleep in and a place to lay their heads every night. We are proud to tell you that the school which consists of a chapel is 95% complete. The foundation of the dormitories has been finished and we send our heartfelt thanks and gratitude to Cornerstone Church who have made all this possible.

We are thankful to God for adding us another friend, Austin Gutwein, the founder of Hoops for Hope and he is a young man in high school and he reminds me of myself. He donated toward the dormitory which has helped finish half of the first Block Dormitories and the rest was contributed by Cornerstone Church. On the 4th July l stood in front of the congregation at Cornerstone Church in Chandler, Arizona and l shared with them mission of occupying the first block latest the month October 2011.

At first it seemed like a pipe dream but I had faith and continued praying. During the annual mission trip to Huruma this year in the Month of July, Pastor Linn worked in the dormitories and it was a confirmation that the first block of the dormitories will be done by October. We are almost done and we are currently fixing the floor, setting up the plumbing system and installing electricity. As our friends and partners we are delighted to have you on-board so that you can personally witness the changes taking effect as we finish this big project in Huruma Children’s Home.

Home News…

By Grace Silantoi-Social Worker

Once again I am humbled to have this opportunity to bring to your attention the news of yet another great month that the Lord has given us. In Kenya, August is a vacation month and we are grateful for the Lord’s providence during this time. The children enjoyed it more than ever before and thank you for all who made it possible through selfless commitment by volunteers. I would love to extend my heartfelt gratitude to all the individuals, groups and organizations that opened up their hearts and gave my children a shoulder to cry on and a friend to talk to.

Namely I would like to appreciate the Clarence Matheny Ministries and the Nairobi Pentecostal Church for sponsoring our senior and junior youth for one week training on love, spiritual guidance and wonderful teachings based on Christian values. The knowledge impacted on our children is priceless and our hope and prayer that it will be evident in their lives.

Also I would like to thank Edney Robimonich who provided dental care for the children and made few referrals with the promise of following up on their health. Jonathan Tench, Tamara and Grant, who have always had an open heart for my children and the candle you lit, will burn brightly in their lives. The best portions of a good mans life are his little nameless, unremembered acts of kindness and love.

May the Lord almighty continue to bless those people who have always stood by our side through thick and thin and filling any gap that ever existed. Mother Teresa’s defined love, “It is not how much we do, but how much Love we put in the doing. It is not how much we give, but how much Love we put in the giving.” Be blessed friends FOREVER!!!!

School News

High School Report:

The second term of this year ended very well on August 4th 2011 and we had an attendance record of 5 teachers and twenty four students. We didn’t have the August tuition because the students went for a Christian camp for two weeks. Then later they spent time with their relatives for duration of one week. We did not have any major cases of indiscipline and this was reflected during the camp and we are very happy about this. The results were good and promising because most of the students scored good marks. Those who held the first three positions were appreciated including the most improved and this has motivated others to work hard.

Some teachers left the school for further studies but fortunately; we have received new teachers who have replaced them. We strongly believe that the students’ performance will not be affected by the replacement but there is need for one more teacher. As a school we focus on both academics and co-curricular activities and good staffing helps achieve this goal because we believe that the children should be well rounded. In conclusion we would like to thank the management for making it possible to achieve our goals and also God for the good health and strength.

Primary School Report:

By the end of the term the school attendance report was 12 teachers and 184 students. 169 The total population of the school as we closed was 185, whereby the boarders are 125 and children from the community. Some of the students spent some time with their relatives which were refreshing for the children. There were no major cases of indiscipline and everything was well and good and thank you for the teamwork between the pupil and teachers to make this possible. Holiday tuition was held in the last two weeks of August for the students in eighth grade. Staffing was available throughout out this month and this helped in the smooth running of activities within and without the school. In conclusion we thank God for the provision of all the basic needs through our dear beloved Director.

Home Health News

I thank the Almighty God for the grace he has bestowed upon us. The month of August has been a clam one because there has no major illness reported. Our HIV kids are doing great and we thank God for granting them good health as they continue striving towards their goal in life. Their clinical check-ups with Lea Toto Health Centre went on as usual and they are responding well to their treatment. As a whole, the health status of all our children has been good and we thank God for making this possible in regards to His un-ending love, care and protection to all our beautiful children. We want to thank our donors who have been contributing fruits, peanut butter, and medicine to our HIV-Positive children which helps boost their nutrition. Currently we have a shortage of antibiotic syrups and capsules also cough syrup. We really need these medicines because they help cure most minor ailments.

Income generating activities:

The Green house project

The green project was started was started by Kay Johnson with the ministry of Least of these. We did trials to see which type of vegetable can thrive in the green house. After several attempts, spinach thrived best and we are glad to report that we consume the spinach from the project. This has helped in making our diet better.

  • Continued support for the dormitories building
  • Provision of salaries
