Dormitories Construction Commences AgainWe have started building our dormitories again this month of February 2009. The dormitories construction project started last year with the help of Sabrina and her friends in Germany. They printed Huruma 2008 calendars which raised US$ 30,000 and together with the normal donations savings of US$ 20,000, we were able to start the foundation of the dormitories because at the time the children department was accusing us of congestion, and we had to show them that we are concerned and we are doing something. Am so happy because we need a lot of money for the dormitories and before our Dad died, he and mama were going to Arizona, USA as guests of Cornerstone Christian Fellowship in Chandler to talk about the need to build the dormitories. Papa Isaac never made it but Mama went alone to Cornerstone Church and they promised to build for us our dormitories. Now am glad to say that we are constructing the slab. Only those people conversant with construction can know what we are saying. We need a lot of prayers because building materials are getting more expensive daily but am hopeful that the building is going to be finished. It has costed a lot of volunteers and friends for us to be where we are now. This is the 19th year of Huruma and now one can see the dream clearly, although before nobody could understand what mama wanted. We are so proud that she has all along stood firm and as we stand behind her I welcome you to join us in praying for her. We thank God for all of you who have believed in our mother, Mama Zipporah. May God bless you for helping her to feed, educate and care for us. Without you we could have been a nobody, but we are proud of you for giving us a reason for living. The dormitories when finished will accommodate 400 children but at that time we shall employ dorm mothers who will help us with caring for them. Right now Mama Zipporah takes care of the children but when the dormitories are finished she has agreed to look out for mothers for the children. It is also our vision to integrate children from normal families who will be attending our school but they will be paying an accommodation fee. Home News Huruma Children’s Home has continued to empower children from poor backgrounds and more so for those who are total orphans. We are privileged to have that God given power through Mama Zipporah, to defend the cause of the weak and the fatherless. On a recent occurrence the home had to admit three children who were physically abused by their parents. A brother and sister, aged 14yrs and 9yrs respectively who were continually assaulted by their own father who after the death of their mother married a second wife. The father went into hideout and the police are trying their best to trace the father for more investigations. The children ran away from their home in the Ngong suburbs and started loitering in the town, where members of the public became concerned and reported the matter to the police who referred the two to the home. The boy known as Michael had sustained injuries from the assaults and his left arm and left lower limbs were swollen.
The third case was that of Grivan, whose plight was highlighted in the local media and members of the community through the area councilor who rescued the boy. He was physically abused by his step mother who has been living with the boy after the death of his mother. He was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital who confirmed that the boy was almost paralyzing on the left side of his body. On admission in the home the boy acted in fear and showed signs of shock and continually falling down due to weakness on the left side. He has started adopting his new environment free from abuse. He is of tender age estimated to be about three and half years and one wonders how can an innocent heart suffer on the hands of his step mother while his biological father is still alive.
The home current population is 137 children having reunited two cases with distant relatives, disengaging three boys who cleared form four last year. They are currently living on their own as they continue working in the children’s ministry awaiting for their results due on February. The home will continue supporting the children who were reunited, through high school as this will help them realize their future dreams of becoming prominent people in the society.
Again God bless Huruma for supporting the less fortunate in the society and also building the capacity of others especially women infected and affected with HIV/AIDS who are currently making beautiful beads in the home. This will boost their morale and they feel accepted as well as help them become self-reliant women in the society. Huruma Chapel Report - By Pastor JosephThe Church has been running so well and we have seen the hand of God so far, I thank God for that. Church members consist of children from the home and the Huruma staff. Also we have people from the community, which is a practical encouragement to the children in the home, to understand that what they are told is true that, they need God even after they leave the home. From the previous January end month report, I highlighted the progress on the formation of the church committee which has really helped in the management and planning of the church. One of the main achieved plan is the taking of the Holy Communion, every first Sunday of every month, which is a commission from God, to take it as many times as possible. Also we have the church departments which help in different areas to make the church progress well. These church departments are: - - The ushering department, which is headed by David Mburu, who is a former child of the home.
- The intercessors department which is headed by Mrs. Kironyo, who comes from the community and a good friend of the home for a very long time. She is also a long time member of the church as well as a member of the church council.
- The Sunday school department, which is headed by the newly wife of the Head teacher of the school, Mrs. Dorcas Kwaka.
- The junior youth department, which is headed by Mrs. Kyangavo, commonly known as Mama Tom who is also a good friend of the home for some time and a good member of the church, as well as a member of the church council.
- Senior youth department, which I head, and am also the Pastor of the Church, and the Vice-Chairman of the church council.
- The church choir which is headed by Mr. Kimani, who is a newly member of the church, but a former child of Mama Zipporah’s programme in Mathare Slums Ngong.
- The technical department which is headed by George who is the last born of the three biological children of our loving Mom (Mama Zipporah) commonly known, and our Late loving Dad and Pastor Isaac Kamau, together with Mr. Erastus Kwaka who is the Head teacher of the school and a long time member of the church.
- The praise and worship department, which is headed by Moses who is a former child of the home and a long time member of the church.
- We also have Sister Monica, who is the youth patron and the church council chairlady.
- The church has employed a professional musician (Mr. William) who is trying to work with the praise and worship team, to try and raise the standard of music in the church. He has also produced a song of the home with the Gospel Dancers.
- Finally, we have Mama Zipporah as the overall or the overseer of everything in the church. She is the one who gives us the direction and advices us all on how to run our various departments.
Our Objective as a church is to make Huruma Chapel a ‘House of God’, more and more beautiful and vibrant. Also to make a difference in the lives of my brothers and sisters and the society as a whole through spreading/preaching the Word of God. In conclusion, we have seen the faithfulness and the hand of God so far, and we are confident that He will continue to shower us with his blessings and renew our strength each and every passing day.
To God be the glory now and forever more Amen. Medical Report - By Nurse Mary
The month of February has been a commendable one concerning the health issues of the children. There were no major issues and the only referral that was done was of one girl who had hurt her leg. She was X-rayed and the leg had no fracture. She was reviewed and put under medication and her condition now is stable. The clinic which has been of great support to the children is running well and the home nurse treated the minor illnesses and the response was excellent. The nurse also administered individual child counseling on health issues to children aged between ages 12 and above. This will help establish a healthy growth especially at this stage when the body requires more energy. The H.I.V. positive children continued with their monthly clinic at the Lea Toto health centre and the nurse has continued with organizing their drugs and no cases of drug withdrawal has been reported.

A Vote of Thanks from Mama ZipporahWe are now taking one day at a time. We have seen God and seen his power. It has not been easy but he has been so wonderful to us. Our hearts are now accepting that Dad will never be with us again. One of the things which we did in February is working on the Memorial Garden. We Thank God for many of you who prayed and encouraged me spiritually and morally. We still want to thank God for Cornerstone Church in Chandler, Arizona who have continued their support of building for my children even more sending Lisa Lopez for three months to be with us as we go through this dark moment of our lives. All my children continue to support me so much and l feel safe. My community is very kind to me and especially at this time when we have really famine in our county. The Kenyan community continue to feel they are apart of us and they have committed to see that we have food which has become so dear. We thank God for Dr. Johnson and his Wife Kay who have continued to support our H.I.V. positive children with quality medical care. Last month they donated 40 bags of maize and 20 bags of beans which means a lot to me. As l finish l want you to know that among the children who sat for their O’ Level exams, Ezekiel Mutheki got a B+ which is a very great boost to the home. George was the first one with an A- and then we had Otieno with a B+ and now Mutheki has followed with B+. It’s my prayer as years go by we shall have a lot of A’s in the O’level exams to the rest of the children. May you be blessed and may God visit you in a special way. Conclusion by the Administrator: Sialo CatherineFebruary has been quite a short month but with a lot of great happenings. I thank God that we managed to take ten of my brothers and sisters to their various high schools as they transition from primary school level to high school level. This is quite a different experience for them as they leave the home and go out there to start living in a different environment but I believe they will adjust well and life in school will be fun for them. Pray for them as they embark on this journey of their lives that they will come out better and intelligent individuals who will make a difference to the society as well as themselves as a whole. The rest of the children each moved up to a higher class and they are progressing well in their various classes. Three of our boys cleared high school last year and one of them performed very well in the national examination of secondary education. We are quite hopeful that in the next one year he will add up to our older children who are in universities and I thank God for this. All the three boys are all now helping the teachers in our home school and they are doing a stunning job. I want to thank all our volunteers where currently we have Lisa Lopez from Cornerstone Christian Fellowship and Tim Clayton from Australia amongst others who have volunteered to come and help Mama in her work. Remember that your contribution is priceless and we pray that God will bless you. Words cannot express the joy and gratitude in our hearts for the enormous effort you have made in prayer and kind, to make our dreams come true. We pray that the almighty God will bless you and may he guide you through all your endeavors. I would also like to take this moment and thank all our friends and partners all around the world for the support you have given us through prayers and donations in kind and cash. May the Almighty God bless you in such a mighty way. For how you can donate to the home visit our website. May God bless you.
