Huruma Family <---> By: Mama Zipporah

Amidst our activities in June, we were also preparing for the group of 25 volunteers from Cornerstone Church in Arizona, Chandler, who were coming in July.  They told me that due to all of the negative reports about the safety of our country Kenya some of them dropped from coming, but thanks to 19 of them who took the bull by the head and they came down.

Due to the cancellation of their tickets at the last moment the group was broken down into two. Mama Lisa who is Pastor Linn’s wife lead the first group of 7 plus my daughter Caroline who is now a member of Cornerstone Church, which is hosting her as she pursues her Masters in Non-Governmental Organizations.

The first group arrived on the 3rd of July and the second group arrived on the 5th of July early in the morning which was on Sunday, lead by Pastor Linn Winters who is the Senior Pastor of Cornerstone Church in Chandler, Arizona.  I was so touched by their love for our children for if they did not love us they could not have come.  Together with him he was accompanied by some elders from the church and a battalion of youths who are the strength of the church.

For the two weeks they were here every day mattered and by the time they left they had painted our home and it now looks beautiful. Together with the builders of the dormitory they built a link path from the main house to school and also they built a retain wall to retain the soil so now the property of the school stands on its own and the home on its own.  It was a lot work but they ensured that they had accomplished all they had purposed to do during their stay here in Huruma.

You know for me when l see a Pastor, l put him on his right job although Pastor Linn was coming to build this time and that is what he wanted to do and he made sure he came with his elders who had knowledge of building.  But still l persuaded him to have some time with our pastor’s fellowship group and have a one day seminar with them.  He agreed to this and also apart from that he started an evening seminar for the staff who work in Huruma.

But mostly l think he loves building and l think before he became a pastor he was builder although I understand from his history that he became a pastor when he was very young.  One day they surprised me as all the men together with him woke early morning and started painting the front of our home and by around 10 a.m. they had finished.

I am so proud of them and I am really short of words when it comes to express my thanks to them. May the Lord bless all of you for loving and caring for me and my children.

Counseling Report <---> By: Sis Monicah

The month has been great and we continued with the topic on healthy relationships where we covered on a sub-topic on LOVE versus INFATUATIONS. This sub-topic led to the discovery that most of the feelings that the youth go through at teenage years is not really love but infatuations.

The word infatuations refers to the strong feelings that makes or leads someone to like something so much, in that when you are not careful one might go out of control for  example, sexual feelings that lead many youths to pre-mature sex and hence we had to discuss the dangers involved.

We discussed what truth means and we discovered that the Bible commands us to live a holy life and this was reflected in the book of Colossians 3:1-17. Our golden verse was no. 5 that says “Put to death therefore whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed which is idolatry”.

We have benefited very much through counseling sessions and we appreciate the fact that so many children with serious cases have been able to digest what they went through and are in a position to face on life despite its challenges.

May the Lord bless you, big time!

Home School Report <---> By: Mr. Kwaka

Kindergaten

Generally, the month of July begun well and learning is in progress. with the availability of resources like chairs, toys and other kindergarten materials, which are vital for a conducive learning atmosphere, all is going on well. Each of the children has an academic progress book whereby the teacher comments individually about the performance of each student. The progress book is very important because it helps parents/guardians and teachers, gauge where each child is academically.

Lower and Upper Primary

Performance in lower primary level has greatly improved even as these pupils were in the transition period from kindergarten. I highly suggest that by next term, the pupils will do better and raise the mean score. For the upper level extensive reading and writing is emphasized a lot in these classes. Academically the pupils are good and most are now serious with their work with just a few problems. In terms of discipline, the pupils in this section of the school have shown tremendous improvement since the beginning of the term. Beyond any reasonable doubt, the performance in these classes will gradually raise and improve with the combined effort of the administration, teachers, parents and the pupils.

Teaching has been made easier by the availability of adequate text books and we are doing our very best to achieve very good results.  We also do encourage the pupils in reading books. We have library lessons in every class of which the teacher takes them to the library to read under guidance from the library teacher. With this, a lot of improvement in English grammar has been witnessed.

The vision of empowering children cannot only be achieved in class work but also with the involvement of the co-curricular activities.  By this, talents are noticed and natured to maturity. This is discovered through clubs and that’s the reason of having clubs in our school.  The school has a total of six clubs each headed by a club patron who are members of our teaching staff and they hold club meetings and activities everyday.

With a team spirit, the school hopes to fulfill the vision of empowering children in need with self-reliant skills by working together and tirelessly for the betterment of the child. Thank you so much and God bless you for you generous support.

Dormitories Construction

The dormitories and church construction continues although this time not much can be noted because we are filling the foundation.  I also want to thank God because the fillings were dug from our property so it has saved us a lot of money if we had to buy it.  Right now we are only paying labour given by the local people who are helping me with the filling up of the foundation.  For the church am happy to inform you that the construction is going on well and its my prayer by the end of August we shall put the roofing.  Already we have bought the iron bars for the roof and that is why am very positive we shall be able to put the roofing by the end of the August.

With the support of Pastor Linn and the battalion of Elders who visited our Home in July they helped us make a retain wall and also funded the link pathway from the school to the home.  Before we had a lot of problems especially when it rained because of kids bringing in mud in the house and in school and with only one shoe for some of the children, we had to tell them to remove the shoes and it was hard for them especially when it was cold.

I thank Mama Lisa and Mama Jane who noted the problem when they came for my husband’s funeral last year because it rained so much and we had a big problem as mud was spread out everywhere in the house.  We thank God for the continued support of Cornerstone Church for the dormitories and we now have a lot of hope that soon the children will be able to occupy it.

To tell you the truth even though the Children’s Department is encouraging us to try to link the children with their relatives,  I can honestly say it’s very hard for them due to the deteriorating conditions where food is so scarce and one is not willing to take anyone outside his immediate family.  Just pray for the children of Kenya as they need to be rescued by God.  I thank God for the support He has given me and l will continue fighting and speaking for the rights of children of which l was a victim 40yrs ago.

My family never helped me and everywhere l went l was used as a maid if its today they could have been arrested or even jailed.  But l thank God for helping me out and l want the best for my children.  Right now we are still in my house and you are welcome to come and see but we share the beds and l still think its better than sleeping in the corner of the street.

Huruma Chapel News <---> By: Pastor Jojo

God has been good to us even now that we just completed the August youth camp, which was managed by Cornerstone Church from Arizona, Chandler.  All the same God has been faithful to us and He has continued to shower us with His amazing love. We have been running the church for the last 10 months since our Pastor/Dad died and for sure we have gone in to higher spiritual levels.  I say we; because as the pastor am not alone, but we have the church council, who make the all the plans for the church and have been standing with me for all these months.

Also we have church departments who work every day to make the church, as Christ in tended.  We are hoping that our church is going to be completed soon, as the roofing is in progress and all this is God’s doing.  We are blessed so much because from last month we have had Pastor Linn Winters with us and this month we had Pastor Chris with us and it has really been a blessing.

We are hoping that the church will be going to higher levels with time, as we allow the Trinity to have the ways in the church.  We have been having Cornerstone Christian fellowship Church from U.S.A in the church since last month and now the last group is about to leave, and we thank God for them and the work they are doing to impact peoples’ lives and increasing Gods kingdom. To God be the Glory for everything He has been doing and all He is doing and all He is planning to do in our lives.

Together in God’s fellowship.

Home News <---> By: Sis Grace

The month of July started well and as a home we have a reason to thank God for everything he has done to our precious home, as well as the care and protection He has offered to us as the Huruma fraternity. There has been no major occurrence in the home and all went smoothly as was expected by everyone in the entire organization.  God has been so much faithful to us for the provision of our basic needs and more so for giving us people all over the world to share our burdens with.

The home received foodstuffs from individuals and also from institutions and no single day we have gone without food. First may I appreciate the Aflewo praise and worship team who spent most of their time with the children doing all kind of manual work and note that we can do so little but together we can do so much.  May God bless you and provide for you in abundance.  It’s of great need that you spend your time with us and the children feel appreciated even by the wider community.   May the Lord sustain your kindness.

Many special thanks go to our friends from Cornerstone Church in Arizona, Chandler for defending the rights of the less fortunate in our society and above all supporting the poor and the fatherless.  Know that we love you so much for the fact that you truly love us and we consider it a joy knowing you.  We have infinite faith in you and we believe it’s never too late to be what we might have been. We know that for every obstacle there is a solution OVER, UNDERGROUND OR THROUGH.

Thanks to the group that came from Arizona for the wonderful work they did in the two weeks they were with us. This was excitement with inspiration, motivation and a pinch of creativity and we are short of words to explain how we feel but I believe that God will reward you accordingly. Our home is very beautiful after initiating the path way that runs from the main house to the school compound.

Thank you also for refreshing the old paintings and the whole place looks great.  It’s very encouraging to feel that we have people out there who think of us in a positive way. Many many thanks once again and receive Gods blessing and above all may you receive lots of gratitude from our God given children.
May I also remember our friends who visited the home as individuals touching the lives of our children in one way or the other.  Last but not least our volunteers from different parts of the country and those who come from abroad.

May God intervene in every way of your lives. You have given us material support and to an extent, given us a shoulder to cry on.  May He also give you the desires of your hearts.

Home Health News <---> By: Nurse Mary

The health clinic has continued to offer great services to the children who are able to access medical health care when need arise.  There has been no major health issue in the home and only minor cases which were treated in the home clinic.  The HIV cases continued to follow up with their clinic for counseling and obtaining their ARV drugs which are later organized in their organizers which becomes easier for them when taking. I also make sure the drugs are taken at the right time and there is no defaulting. The kids are also weighed on a monthly basis and encouraged on proper feeding.

Drug withdrawal has not been reported among our children and none has experienced opportunistic infections and we thank the Lord for the care and protection He has offered to our children.  Generally, the health status of our children is satisfactory and we appreciate the fact that they have not lacked food at this time of food crisis in our country.  More so the oat meal which is very nutritious has also boosted all our children’s health.

I as the one in charge of our home clinic highly appreciate the volunteers who supported the clinic by supplying it with facility equipment and drugs.  May the Lord Almighty bless them and bless the work of their hands.  Thanks also to those who devoted their time and resources and assisted us in the clinic by monitoring the children’s health. Special thanks go to Dr. Robin who supplied drugs to the clinic and personally attended to some health problems in the clinic. It was such a blessing and May the Lord Almighty give you the desires of your heart as you continue serving in the children’s Ministry.

We would really love the vision of having a physiotherapy department in our clinic to serve the community who seek this service which is out of reach in our home clinic. Thanks for Josphat Gichana from Dagoretti Children’s Centre who was suggesting this when he paid a visit to the home.  Support us in prayer for the same vision.

Search for A mother <---> By: Mama Zipporah

This is one of the hardest tasks I have ever taken. You know our Zipporah small as we call her here at home has reached of age.  Even though she is a victim of physical abuse from her step-dad we as a home cannot hold her for ever.  She is now in form one in Danana Girls High School located in Arthi River, and soon the four years would have been over and she had to be on her own.

Despite her been in the home we had always known she had a mother but we did not know her name or anybody connected to her.  The other day l went to one of our Kenyan private schools where l met the Director and he told me that the mother of small Zipporah works there but l hit the rock because l even did not know her names.  I came home frustrated knowing in mind there was need to search for her for little Zipporah’s sake.

For Zipporah she told me she could not even remember her face and even the name of her mother whom she left when she was 6 years old.  So now you can estimate and know the age she was in when she came to the home. But God never lets you down because just as we were talking about my worries for this particular mission, a friend told me that she knew her telephone number.  Am happy to tell you that l was finally able to re-unite little Zipporah with her mother.

Thanks to Mama Lisa who got her from her school so that she could meet with her mother. It was a happy ending, all though a relationship has to be built again. May the Lord be praised.

May God Bless You!
