Huruma family is delighted to present you with our Home newsletter for the month of February. We feel blessed and delighted this moment as we share with you what the Lord has been doing in our wonderful Home and our lives. We pray that you will be refreshed and blessed as you read through it. We hope our friends and partners will appreciate the news update. Here is another of our Huruma Newsletter. Blessings to you!! Love, Huruma Fraternity. Huruma Family (By: Mama Zipporah)This is a month which came with a lot of blessings, especially seeing God fulfilling one of the desires of my heart, since we started the school. I really loved and admired the late Mr. Grivins, who was the Founder of Starehe Boys School in Nairobi, which started in 1950 as a children’s home and school. Today, even if the home and the primary school have since been faced out, there still remains one of the best boys high schools in our country which has been patronized by some of our senior people in the country.
Am proud to report that now we have our very first stream of our own High School where have started with our own children who sat for the national examinations last year. This new venture is also one of our income projects where we want it to be self sustainable. As a result we are planning to take in new students in the near future who will be charged school fees and this will enable us pay the teachers who are teaching in the school. The students have different school uniforms and they really look wonderful and different from our primary school students. I want to thank all my friends and partners for helping me achieve my goal and mission of empowering my children through quality education. Am happy to introduce Miss. Pollyanne as the principal of our new high school. She holds a bachelors degree in Education and she is being assisted by three other teachers who are professionally trained as high school teachers. I am greatly touched by Mrs. Kay Johnson of The Least of These Ministry as well as our volunteers namely Ina and Anneke of the Meva Foundation in Holland who have greatly assisted in equipping the new high school with all the required textbooks and other school necessities. May the Almighty God bless you and bless the work of your hands; I don’t know what I could have done without the kind gestures you have shown towards our home schools. Currently we are looking forward to equipping the laboratory facility which is set to be completed before the end of the year.
We are going back to court on the 19th of April 2010. There are times when you do not know what to expect so l cannot tell you much in regards to this issue. But one thing l know is that am not alone and l thank you so much for continuing to help and support my work. The biogas project is about to reach it’s completion as only the gas line is remaining. It is was such a big project than we thought and am proud that it’s almost finished and we can start seeing the fruit of it very soon. Another wonderful thing is that through your help we have been able to build an underground water tank which is harvesting water from all our school roof water collection points. The tank is 30 x 23 and it is fifteen ft deep thus it’s able to take in 250,000 liters of water especially now we are experiencing some heavy down pours. I thank God for Standard Charted Bank who came first and started this wonderful project of harvesting rain water for the rooftop of our school.
Am so excited and thankful to God for making my desire a reality and I believe that He shall see us through till the end for He is the one who started this good work in me and He is the only one who can bring it to an end. I do not know what l could have done without you our friends and partners. Remember when l see what is happening in Huruma l remember you all and it’s my prayer that God will meet your needs too according to the desires of your heart. Home News (By: Sis Grace)The month of February was a great month for us in the Home and we give thanks to God Almighty for being faithful in His providence and the care He has given unto us. The Word that encouraged us since the beginning of the just concluded month is about taking our refuge in God and the readings are found in the book of Hebrews 10:35 which says “Do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded. You need to persevere it so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what He has promised”. I thank God for touching the hearts of many in our country as well as internationally, for no single day our children went without food. People have given in plenty and our cup is overflowing for we do not belong to those who shrink back and get destroyed but we belong to those who believe and are saved.
February was also a month where our last year’s candidates were preparing to join high school and God provided for their school necessities in time. Everything including their school uniforms came almost at the same time and surely this is the God we serve, our Jehovah Jireh. The new candidates were committed to their household chores since they cleared class eight and theirs is a reward that they received back. I believe the IMPERATIVE is to find what is right and doing it and the best way to find yourself, is to lose yourself in the service of others and this is what these children did; not counting that someone has been employed to do so but standing on the frontline to assist in household chores. My prayer is that they will work hard in education since I believe they have the ability, resources and the motivation to do so, since these are the three factors of high performance. May I take this opportunity to thank everyone who played a role to make sure that the children realize their dreams in their academic journey. For all the financial and non-financial support we got from people May the Lord reward you in abundance and May the work of your hands be blessed because a person’s true wealth is the good that one does in the world and for sure we have a true testimony that we have received part of your wealth. Again I say thank you, ASANTE SANA!!
I cannot forget those who gave foodstuffs in the Home either as individuals or organizations. Surely I have no words to express what I feel but I know by giving to the needy, you are lending to the Lord and in whatever you do, work at it with all your heart as working for the Lord, not for men and you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It’s the Lord Christ you are serving. Again be BLESSED!!
Before I conclude, am happy to report the progress of the children garden (“shamba”) projects, which they have been working on tirelessly. We have just harvested foodstuffs from these garden projects and am excited to say that it was a good harvest. We harvested a lot of maize, potatoes, onions, and vegetables which they sold to the Home. The money in return benefits them during educational tours and other educational projects that may arise. They have also realized that discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishments and they are now self motivated towards their achievements!!
Therefore, as God chosen people, Holy and dearly loved, clothe yourself with Compassion, Kindness, Humility, Gentleness and Patience and over all these virtues put Love which binds them all together in perfect unity. May God bless you as you continue serving the needy and for more news SEE U NEXT MONTH!! Home Health News (By: Nurse Mary)The month has been great with no major incidences in regards to our children’s health. Our HIV-positive children continued to follow up with their clinic for counseling and obtaining their monthly ARV drugs from Lea Toto Health Clinic. The clinic has continually been observing our children health status and advising the Home clinic where required on how to boost our children’s immunization system. Drug withdraw has not been reported among our children and none has experienced opportunistic infections and we thank the Lord for care and protection He has continually offered to our children. Lea Toto Health Clinic always provides the Home with nutritional porridge flour for boosting our HIV-positive health status. May the Almighty God bless all those individuals involved in the health clinic and may He grant them the desires of their hearts.
The clinic facility also received enough drugs from Sister. Robin from World Gospel Mission who has been of great help to our home clinic. She has contributed a lot in ensuring that our clinic is well stocked with all the necessary medication required for all our children. Primary School News (By: Mr. Kwaka)INTRODUCTION Huruma primary school is single stream school which is registered by the Kenya’s Ministry of Education and it is composed of eleven classes from the lowest which is baby class to the highest which is standard eight with a population of 168 pupils. The school has further been divided into four sections namely kindergarten, lower primary, middle primary and the upper primary. The school activities start from 7.00am to 4.45pm. where learning activities starts from 7:15am to 3:45pm for the upper primary, 7:15am to 3:10pm for the lower primary and 8:45am to 12:30pm for the kindergarten section. After the learning sessions the pupils engage in outdoor activities which start from 3.45pm to 4.45pm. During this time we have different activities planned for each day. NEW ENROLLMENT This year has begun very well for our school in regards to the numbers enrolled this year in our institution. As a result of our school’s good performance in the last year’s national examinations, a number of parents have decided to bring their children to our school. So far we have enrolled six pupils in our school, of which two are girls and four are boys. All of them are from the local community. We are anticipating for more community pupils to join our school and we are so happy for how our home children have been excelling in their education thus attracting the outside community in to our home school. ACADEMICS This year entry exams results proved that there is a great potential if our pupils are monitored closely by their respective teachers. Class one did not sit for the entry exams as they were right from the kindergarten grade and had not gotten a chance to learn anything in the primary section which they have now joined. These pupils were in the transition period from kindergarten to primary level and am happy to report that they are picking up well and I believe by the end of this study term they will have learnt a great deal. Am highly convinced that with the next few coming exams, they will catch up and hopefully raise their mean score and be in the same level with the other grades. SATURDAY REMEDIAL CLASSES Remedial classes have been introduced to assist pupils who are slow learners to help them catch up with their class syllabus. These classes are held on Saturdays as from 9:00am to 4:00pm and all the teachers are working hard and have put in extra hours to see the pupils improving in all areas of their studies. No any extra charge has been added onto the community parents.
GRADE EIGHT & SIX EDUCATION TRIP On the 22nd of February the grade eight and six pupils were taken out for a tour to a place called Paradise Lost for a whole day. This great and fun trip was financed by two of our long time volunteers and friends from Holland named Ina and Anneke. Accompanying the pupils were the class teachers of the two grades as well as the Headmaster. The pupils totally enjoyed themselves as the trip involved a cook-out where they all engaged in some cooking of some wonderful filling meals. The trip was all a success and the pupils plus their teachers and volunteers really enjoyed themselves. Each of the pupils arrived back home safely and we thank God for His care and protection all the way. LIBRARY Our school received new text books and stationery in addition to our great collection of books in our library. We are privileged to have a well built and equipped facility, which is fully stocked with reference books and materials, study books and storybooks for all ages. All classes are still continuing with their library sessions allocated on their study timetables and they are always accompanied by their teachers to help them with the reading. The pupils also borrow books from the library, and this has immensely improved on their communication oral and written skills especially in the English language. CLUBS The vision of empowering children cannot only be achieved in class work but also with the involvement of the co-curricular activities. By this, talents are noticed and natured to maturity. Our school has discovered this through clubs and as a result we have various clubs in our home school. The school has a total of six clubs each headed by a club patron who are members of our teaching staff. The club meetings and activities are all done every day from 4:00pm to 4:45pm where each day has a different club activity scheduled for the pupils. Secondary School News (By: Miss Polyanne)INTRODUCTION Ngong Huruma Secondary School is a new school project that was started in the month of February this year. In order to achieve our mission which is to promote the academic, spiritual, emotional and social development of children from Huruma Children’s Home and surrounding areas, the school is equipped with adequate teaching and learning facilities which includes a library where teachers and learners can get textbooks and other reference materials. The setting up of a laboratory is also ongoing to ensure that students acquire a practical approach especially for the science subjects. We also have a teaching staff of four teachers who are qualified and can adequately cater for all the subjects. To ensure spiritual nourishment of our learners and teachers, we have also set aside time for daily morning devotions. ENROLMENT We started by admitting form one students only and so far we have a total of fifteen students. Thirteen of these students are children from the home and among them two are HIV-Positive whereas the other two are day scholars. We started by admitting a small number of students so as to ensure that they are provided with adequate resources as required. However, we intend to admit more students in future for we have sufficient resources.
SCHOOL ROUTINE On weekdays learners attend preps from 6:30am to 7.30am and they have so far shown seriousness by engaging in constructive activity during this time. Classes usually begin at 8:30am after the morning devotion and end at 3:45pm. From 3:45pm to 4:45pm learners are engaged in extra curricular activities after which they are allowed to go home. On Saturdays we have remedial classes in the morning session which is beneficial especially for the weak and slow learners. In the afternoon session we have a creative arts lesson and this is meant to equip the learners with various skills such as sewing and cookery among others. On Sundays afternoon we have a planned activity where the learners are engaged in with activities e.g. games, music, and entertainment or counseling sessions. EXTRA CURRICULUM ACTIVITIES In order to produce all rounded individuals we are encouraging the learners to participate in other activities apart from academics and in this way those learners who cannot excel in academics may find out that they can excel in other areas. The extra curricular activities in our school among others include games like football, volley ball and basket ball, athletics: whereby students go for cross-country session, clubs: at the moment since the students are few we have one club that is the Young Farmers Club which is meant to equip them with farming skills and is also a source of income as students can sell their produce after harvest. By engaging in such activities learners are able to learn other skills that may not be included in the curriculum but are beneficial to them and more so they are able to relax and refresh their minds. ACADEMIC PROGRESS The teachers have been committed and are working hard to ensure that learners are benefiting from the learning process. They have also been engaged in counseling the learners so that they develop the right attitude of learning right from the beginning and thus be able to excel in their academics. So far the learners are adapting well to the secondary curriculum and are participating in the various sessions. The teachers have been evaluating the learners on the subjects taught and most of the learners have shown that they have potential and can actually be able to excel in their academics just us our motto states “We are aiming high, the sky is the limit”. Counseling News (By: Sis Monicah)The month of February was a continuation of knowing and understanding ourselves better. We looked on personality in a broader perspective and the youth gradually understood that they are all different, this explaining the reason why they behave differently. We read the word of God that guided us for the whole month from the book of
We helped the youth to discover some of their personality that need change by avoiding evil. For example, some discovered that they get angry very fast and this is destructive. Others are naturally lazy and this affects their overall performance in all they strive to do and achieve. These and many more factors are part of our life that needs change though this change begins on a gradual basis till its full transformation is attained in an individual. With the help of the counselor the youth agreed to pray, practice the Bible and also improve areas that are not of benefit to individuals as well as the society as a whole.
We also helped one another discover themselves by having a session where we discussed each other openly i.e. through asking each other to discuss the other’s character and by so doing one could notice a character in self that needed change. The month ended well and we agreed to start another topic the following month which shall be introduced in out next newsletter. Huruma Chapel News (By: Pastor Jojo)

A Note of Thanks (By: Sialo Catherine)
February has come and gone and am just grateful to God for seen us through another beautiful month. The month has been relatively short but am proud to say that we have accomplished so much in just that little time period. This is a month that Huruma Children’s Home started its own High School for our children but mostly its aim is to cater for all our HIV-Positive children with a purpose of ensuring that they are being taken proper care of. How exciting to see our high school kids totally transformed and always looking smart as they carry themselves around the household. They are really studying hard and encouraging the lower class kids to equally work hard in their education so that the can reach the same education level. Education is very important in one’s life and more so it proves worth it if one can be able to fully maximize on it. Go Huruma scholars as you pursue what the Lord has in store for you!!
It is amazing how God works because during this time when Mama was striving to set up the new high school, Michael and Kay Johnson offered to donate textbooks required for the new school. Also God brought about Ina and Anneke both of the Meva Foundation, Holland, who also donated a lot of textbooks, stationery and exercise books for the new school. The Meva Foundation is also financing for the laboratory facility which is been set-up and we pray that it shall be ready for use by year end.
The rest of the kids are doing great in their various classes. They have been having assessment tests every once in a while and they are really doing well in their studies. The teachers are also playing a great role in ensuring that the kids perform above par as well as encouraging them not to give but to strive on no matter the circumstances. Continue remembering them in your prayers for God’s blessings to be upon their education as well as in all areas of their wonderful lives.
I would like to take this moment to thank all our volunteers around the various parts of the world. It is an honour keeping in touch with us and wanting to always know what is happening in our Home and with the kids. Right now we have four volunteers namely Ina and Anneke from Holland who will be with us for three months and also we have Mariah and Lena from Germany who will be with us for four months. We are grateful to have all of you, our current and past volunteers in our lives and we just want to say that we love you and you are always in our hearts and thoughts. We always remember you in our prayers and we never cease to hope that we shall see you again and host you in our lovely Home.
Lastly I want to appreciate all our friends and partners from all over the world for loving and caring for us. You are special God sent people and we are blessed to have you as part of our children ministry. We love you and we are always praying for you and your families. I want to take this moment and thank all those people who visited our Home this month either individually or in a group. We really appreciate this kind gesture and we are grateful to you all for offering yourselves to come and spend some of your time with our children. May the Lord Almighty bless you all our friends and partners according to the desires of your hearts!! We love you all and you are great treasures to our wonderful children and the entire Huruma Fraternity.
We love you and blessings to you all. |
