Love,
Huruma Family.
Huruma Family (By Mama Zipporah – Founder/Director)
I express our sincere gratitude to all of you who have stood with us as we continue rescuing lives of vulnerable orphans in Kenya. With your love, prayers and giving, hope and destiny have been ignited in our children. Be assured, our faith is increased through your partnership in changing their lives. Through you we have been able to start a sponsorship college fund which will offer our children an opportunity to access higher education institutions in Kenya. This is also a tool that will motivate bright and deserving kids from extreme poor backgrounds to acquire quality education as they strive to achieve their goals in life. This September through the college fund we have been able to sponsor four (5) young men to various institutions of Higher Learning in Kenya.
These first five beneficiaries of the sponsorship college fund are:
- Pastor Joseph Kanyiri popularly known as ‘Jojo’ is studying in Pan African University of Nairobi where he is undertaking a degree course in Theology.
- Moses Thiong’o is studying in Zetech College which is under Jomo Kenyatta University where he is undertaking a certificate course in Catering and Accommodation.
- David Mburu is studying in Gretsa University where he is undertaking a degree course in Business Administration.
- James Mbugua is studying in United States International University (USIU) in Nairobi.
- Ezekiel Jones Mutheki who has joined University of Nairobi and he is partly sponsored by the Government where he is undertaking a degree course in Biological and Physical Sciences.
We are proud to say that two of our children namely, David Otieno and Moses Ndung’u will be finishing their studies next year. David Otieno who was partly sponsored by the Government is finishing his first degree in Agricultural Economics and Moses Ndung’u, who is currently helping the Home in accounts, is finishing his diploma in Business Administration.
We still have got four kids who have finished their high school education to focus on and we pray that we shall be able to place them in various higher learning institutions so that we can start on the kids who are sitting for their Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education Examination this year.
This year the twelve grade kids will be sitting for their Kenya National Examinations which are expected to start on the 21st of October 2010. This year we have five girls and one boy who will be sitting for this examination. In a year from now they too will be ready to join institutions of higher learning which can be a big burden without your help. It is a critical moment, yes! But you will ultimately rejoice with us for a job well done. Working together this time will put our high school kids close to the top as we have started our own high school which is our prayer that the children will be coming out with character and good morals. By sponsoring our children, you our friends and partners are giving them power to change their lives.
The Home has also started a transition that is expected to meet the needs of every high school child of the Home including those cases which are believed to be abandoned and have very little is known of their backgrounds. The Home is connecting them with their respective guardians, relatives and friends of the Home during the school vacations. This will enhance their psychological preparation before final exit from the Home and the child will not appear a stranger to the outside world. Preparation will always be done by our Social Worker and Counselor before every holiday break for this program to be successfully realized. The respective parties who are our kids have really welcomed the idea and the children are very happy for having such a break from home and school schedules. As a result we make sure we pay all their travelling expenses and any other occurring expense while away from home.
You our friends and partners have stood with us and helped us raise the bar of excellence for our children. The urgently needed funds to feed, clothe and educate these children have been realized through your generous donations and we cannot forget the construction of the dormitories which is currently going on. It is our prayer that we shall be able to use the ground floor by June next year where we pray by then that two house floors will be finished and there, a child will be sleeping on his/her own bed with adequate space.
The entire Home and I personally are very appreciative of each one of you who have made this dream possible. Over the 20 years, you have labored and partnered with us to ignite an unquenchable passion for greatness in these kids' lives. Today, their hopes are restored, knowledge and skills are been acquired and an insatiable fire to impact their world is unstoppable. The gratifying feeling of rescuing these traumatized children from the difficult and demeaning background and who had no one to turn to is overwhelming. They are now on their way to take charge of their dreams. With your help today, we will be able to send them out with a bang! And we shall be sending you messages updating you of the progress we have made as we are progressively changing the lives of these champions in Huruma Children’s Home. May God Bless you abundantly!!
Home News
The month of September was a blessing to every one around the home and we appreciate the fact that the Lord has been our shepherd and our provider especially at this time the country is in dire need of the rains. The extreme hot weather has led to food shortage in the country which has really affected a big percentage of the country’s population. The beauty in our hearts is that the Lord has surely set a table before us and our cup is overflowing and that He has placed us in the land flowing with milk and honey. Despite this fact, all our children including those in high school re-opened school in good health. Being the last term of every year they are committed to put more effort for them to graduate to the next level of their education journey.
We do not take it for granted that God has really given us the basic needs for our children and the fact that people as individuals and organizations have continued to offer great support to the Home as a whole. Always pray for us for we are confident about the love of God the Father, Son and of the Holy Spirit. We have special prayers for the Barn Limited who took us by surprise as we received a huge donation of Maize flour amounting to 42 bales of maize flour. By giving to the poor let me assure you that you are lending to the Lord by showing love for others and by truly helping them and not merely talking about it but doing it. If you want to be great, you must be the servant of all the others. Once again God bless you and may He fulfill the desires of your hearts and this will also extend to your lovely families. You are an added asset of change in the lives of our dear children.
To all the volunteers who visited in the month of September, you are a chosen people, a people of power and your continued support towards the Home is overwhelming. Soliciting both non-financial and financial materials towards the benefit of the Home is truly a gift from God who turns our weaknesses to opportunities so that the glory goes back to Him. And though we are weak, His Grace is everything that we need. May the Lords tender love remain and surround you now and forever more.
Special thanks to our dearly loved Mum/Dr. Robin; you remain a flower that doesn’t wither even in the dry spelt. Your continued support is truly God given. Thank you for the big group of dental specialists you brought to attend to our children. Their services benefited almost everyone in the Huruma fraternity, both children and staff.
To the two England volunteers, namely Sam and Sophie, we appreciate and love you for spending a wonderful two weeks with our children. Having you around was amazing and we enjoyed every minute you spend in our Home. To the Australian group that joined us towards the end of September it was great joy to host all of you in our wonderful Home. The play-ground you started renovating for our school is a blessing and the children will always remember you every time they will use that play-ground. The basketball looks amazing thanks to you our dear friends. As Psalms 100 states: Serve the Lord with gladness; come before His presence with singing, for the Lord is good and His mercies endures forever and His truth endures to all the generations. Be blessed for your continued good company as you get to know our children better during the time you will be with us.
To our friends all over the country and internationally, May the love of God abide in you now and forever more. You are like Mount Zion which cannot be moved but endures forever. As the mountains surrounds Jerusalem, May the Lord Almighty surround you both now and forever more. Love is the ART of giving and receiving and for sure we have seen the hand of the Lord working in our midst. And as we continue counting our blessings we cannot forget the return of our stolen beauty; our Home and school van. We are grateful to God for making this possible and seeing our van again reminds us of that fateful day that God saved our staff and children. We love you all and you are always remembered in our prayers. May God bless you abundantly!!
Home Health News
September has been a good month in regards to the health of all our children. We had a chance to enjoy some warm weather and also very few of our children suffered from minor cold illnesses which was not the case with the past three months. Our children had a chance to have thorough dental check-up with professional dentists who were brought to the Home by Sister Robin. All the children who had dental problems were attended to and we are grateful to God for making this possible through touching the hearts of His wonderful servants. Our staff also had a chance to have dental check-up and the ones with problems with their teeth were attended to by these wonderful doctors.
Our HIV kids are doing great and we thank God for granting them good health as they continue striving towards their goal in life. Their clinical check-ups with Lea Toto Health centre went on as usual and they are responding well to their treatment. As a whole, the health status of all our children has been good and we thank God for making this possible in regards to His un-ending love, care and protection to all our beautiful children. We thank our donors who have been contributing eggs, peanut butter, fruits, and medicine to our HIV-Positive children. Thank you all for all the support you provide in regards to making a health facility operate smoothly. May the Almighty God enrich your souls and heart’s desire and we pray that His blessings will be upon always.
Primary School News
After a one-month vocation, the school came back for the third and final term of the year 2010, which started on 6th September 2010 with a number of admissions which has seen a total of 13 pupils being admitted to different classes as from baby class to standard seven. This is also the term that has been targeted for intense revision since the syllabus was covered in the previous term. Towards the end of the term, our standard eight is going to sit for the national examination, Kenya Certificate of Primary Examination (K.C.P.E.) which will start on the 8th of November 2010 to 11th of the same month. We believe that with the effort the teachers are putting in, we are going to have very good results come the end of the year.
The entry-term exam has been concluded and the result has revealed that few of the pupils in some classes need more attention so as to improve in their class work. However, majority of the pupils did well in the exam which is a sign of good things to come. This will be achieved through the commitment of the teachers as well as the progression of the remedial classes on Saturdays. We are looking forward to achieving even better results towards the end of year.
Our school has a staff numbering 15 who work together as a team to see that the pupil are benefiting in all areas of learning. Out of the 15 staff members, 14 are capable teachers who work with the pupils in classes and outdoor activities. Each teacher has got their assigned classes that they teach and lead in the outdoor activities. Of the 14 teachers, we have two who have just joined us. This is because some of our teachers left and joined the Teachers Service Commission of Kenya.
The vision of empowering children cannot only be achieved in class work but also with the involvement of the co-curricular activities. By this, talents are noticed and natured to maturity. This is discovered through clubs and that’s the reason of having clubs in our school. The school has a total of six clubs each headed by a club patron who is members of our teaching staff. The club meetings and activities are all done every day from 4:00pm to 4:45pm. Each day has a different club activities scheduled.
With a team spirit, the school hopes to fulfill the vision of empowering children in need with self-reliant skills by working together and tirelessly for the betterment of the child. Thank you so much and God bless you.
Secondary School News
This being the last study term our students have being so enthusiastic as they will soon be going to the next level of their high school journey. The Lord has kept as well during that past month and the studies have being going on well as expected. I would like to commend the high scholars for the way they have conducted themselves as there has been improvement in terms of discipline and majority of them have shown seriousness as far as pursuit for excellence in academics and other areas is concerned. I urge them to continue with the same spirit as there is more room for improvement.
In regards to their academics the students have been working really hard and this has been reflected through their mid-month examination results. This has also been made possible by the fact that the school is well equipped with adequate text books in our library resulting to motivation in their performance. We have a few students who are weak in some subjects but teachers are working hard to ensure that they perform better in those subjects. Through the continuous assessments we offer our students we strongly hope that their performance will continue improving.
The clubs have being running well and the respective patrons have being introducing new things this motivating the students to participate more and be more involved in the club activities. Also we are planning to introduce activities that will enable our students to interact with fellow students from other schools. We have already put this in motion by introducing games competitions with other schools where our students compete with various schools. We look forward towards competing with other schools both in sports and academically. This will give our students a chance to nurture their sports skills as well as share their knowledge and skills with other fellow students.
We have a lot of hope that we will go far in both academics and co-curricular activities because of the staff and the facilities we have in our school. We want to thank the Huruma administration for making all we do possible and successful. Lastly we want to thank all our friends around the world for supporting our Home and School. May the Lord God bless you all.
